World Juniors 2019 Championship Live

To the general public, December 26th is Boxing Day. For hockey fans, it’s the first day of the World Junior Championships. And for this particular writer, it just so happens to be my favourite day of the year. This is the first time I’m doing such comprehensive World Juniors coverage, and I’m really excited about it.

For the first time since 2006, the World Juniors are back in Vancouver. That year, Canada won gold over Russia, and the Finns defeated the Americans for bronze. Thirteen years later, we’re looking at another tournament with five or six teams in medal contention. And thanks to the way the groups were divided, we could see maximum levels of chaos in quarter-final matchups.

Big shoutout to Elite Prospects for their World Juniors webpages, it made compiling this preview a lot easier, and they have a ton of interesting information on teams, players, and previous tournaments.

World Junior 2019  Championship opens today in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. Florida Panthers top prospects Owen Tippett (Canada) and Aleksi Heponiemi (Finland) will be in action while this past summer’s first round pick, Grigori Denisenko (Russia) will play tomorrow.

Shane Bowers, 19, is heading to his first World Junior Championship after making the host country’s roster out of training camp. Selected in the first round (28th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators, Bowers was acquired by the Avalanche on Nov. 5, 2017 in a three-team trade that also involved the Nashville Predators.
